How to Play Tongits
Basic Rules
Tongits is typically played by 3-4 players using a standard 52-card deck. Each player receives 13 cards, except the dealer who receives 14. The objective is to form valid combinations and reduce your hand value before opponents do.
Card Combinations
Sets: Three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three Kings or four 7s). Sets can include any suit combination.
Runs: Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 4-5-6 of hearts). Aces can be used as low cards (A-2-3) or high cards (Q-K-A).
Gameplay Flow
On your turn, you must draw one card from the deck or pick up the top card from the discard pile. Then, you can meld valid combinations from your hand, add cards to existing melds on the table (sapaw), or discard one card to end your turn.
Winning the Round
A player wins by either "going out" (melding all cards and discarding the last one) or having the lowest hand value when the deck is exhausted. The winner collects points based on opponents' remaining card values.
Tongits Strategies & Tips
Know When to Fight
Assess your hand strength early. If you have multiple potential melds and low-value cards, consider fighting for the win. However, if your hand is weak, dropping early might minimize your losses on Scatter Games.
Watch Your Opponents
Pay attention to what cards opponents pick up and discard. This helps you deduce their potential melds and avoid discarding cards they might need. Strategic observation is key to winning at Tongits.
Manage High Cards
High-value cards (10, J, Q, K, A) increase your hand value if you lose. Prioritize melding or discarding these cards early to minimize potential losses. Low cards (2-9) are safer to hold.
Use Sapaw Strategically
Adding cards to existing melds (sapaw) is a powerful way to reduce your hand quickly. However, be strategic about when to sapaw, as it reveals information about your hand to opponents.
Practice Bankroll Management
Set limits on your gaming sessions and stick to them. Responsible gaming ensures that Tongits remains an enjoyable experience on Scatter Games without risking more than you can afford.
